Every year there is a special day called Equal Pay Day. This day raises awareness that women still earn less money on average than men.
What Does Equal Pay Day Mean?
“Equal pay” means equal pay for equal work.
Equal Pay Day shows how long women would have to work into the new year to earn the same amount of money that men earned in the previous year.
For example:
If women earn 16 percent less than men on average, it means they would have to work almost two extra months to catch up.
Why Is There a Pay Gap?
There are several reasons:
- Women often work in jobs that are paid less, such as nursing or education.
- Many women work part-time, often because of childcare.
- There are still more men in top leadership positions.
- In some cases, women are paid less even when they do the same job.
The Law in Germany
Since 2017, Germany has had a law called the Pay Transparency Act.
This law allows employees in larger companies to ask how much colleagues in similar positions earn.
The goal is to make salaries more transparent and fair.
However, the pay gap has only decreased slowly so far.
New Rules from the European Union
In 2023, the European Union (EU) introduced a new directive.
Germany must put these rules into national law by 2026.
The new rules are stronger than before:
- Job applicants must be informed about the salary or salary range.
- Employers are not allowed to ask about previous salaries.
- Companies must regularly check whether women and men are paid equally.
- If there are large differences, companies must explain or fix them.
The goal is clear: Equal pay for equal work or work of equal value.
Why Is This Important?
Fair pay means:
- More financial security for women.
- Less poverty in old age.
- More equality in society.
Equal Pay Day reminds us every year that full equality has not yet been achieved.
With new laws and more transparency, the situation should improve in the future.
Because in the end:
Equal work deserves equal pay – no matter the gender.
