In many countries, politicians are discussing new rules for social media like TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat. The big question is:

👉 Should children be allowed to use social media – and from what age?

The main goal is to protect children and teenagers from problems like cyberbullying, stress, sleep loss and harmful content.

🇫🇷 France: Social Media Ban for Under 15s

In France, the parliament has voted for a new law.

  • Children under 15 years old may soon not be allowed to use social media
  • This includes TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat
  • The law still needs approval from the Senate
  • It could start as early as September

French President Emmanuel Macron says that social media can harm young people’s mental health.
He believes children should not be manipulated by algorithms.

📵 France also wants to extend the mobile phone ban in schools, even for older students.

🇦🇺 Australia: First Country with a Full Ban

Australia has already gone further than any other country.

  • Children under 16 are not allowed to use social media
  • Platforms must check the real age of users
  • The law started in December 2025

The government says social media can cause:

  • sleep problems
  • addiction
  • cyberbullying

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: New Rules Being Discussed

In the UK, politicians are talking about a similar idea.

  • A possible social media ban for under 16s
  • Stronger age checks for apps and websites
  • Platforms must show how they protect children

No final law has been passed yet.

🇳🇿 New Zealand: Plans for Under 16s

New Zealand is also preparing a law.

  • Children under 16 may not be allowed to have social media accounts
  • The idea is very similar to Australia

🇺🇸 United States: Different Rules in Different States

In the USA, there is no single rule for the whole country.

  • A national proposal wants to ban social media for under 13s
  • Some states tried stricter laws, but courts stopped them
  • The discussion is still ongoing

🇪🇺 Europe: Many Countries Are Talking About It

In Europe, many countries are discussing new rules, for example:

  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Greece

The problem:
📜 European laws say children also have a right to digital participation, so full bans are difficult.

🤔 Why Do Governments Want These Laws?

Experts say that too much social media can:

  • make children anxious or sad
  • disturb sleep
  • lead to cyberbullying
  • show unrealistic body images
  • make it hard to stop scrolling

Some organisations, like UNICEF, warn:

Quote

Bans alone are not enough. Children also need media education.
